Children's Author and Speaker

I’m Kandace, an author, speaker and educator. I primarily write Black history books for children and young readers; I’ve also written for film, published articles and contributed to a Black British history anthology. I also help curate museum exhibitions about Black history and I speak to businesses and corporate Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI) groups who want to better understand Black history.

I love teaching children and adults alike about Black history. Growing up as a child in London and then Barbados, I realised the existing selection of children’s books about Black people to be sorely lacking; the books I was able to find poorly showcased the diversity and richness of Black history. I’ve recognised that writing about Black history and culture not only brings me a sense of meaning, but it also helps contribute to our shared knowledge and understanding that is otherwise missing without Black voices to champion it.

I’m currently working on book four in a five-book deal with Scholastic UK for my Our Stories: New Black Histories series. I also lead Black history-themed ‘meet the author’ art workshops for children.

If you’re interested in booking me for a museum, school, corporate, or other event or project, please get in touch via the Contact page.
